What this overtime tax calculator does

The calculator starts with gross overtime pay, then subtracts user-entered federal, state, and local tax-rate assumptions, FICA, and paycheck deductions. It is intentionally lighter than a full payroll engine.

Why overtime can feel heavily taxed

Overtime can push more of a paycheck into withholding, and payroll systems may also withhold Social Security, Medicare, state, local, benefit, or post-tax deductions. That does not mean overtime has a special tax rate.

Use your own rates

Because withholding depends on W-4 settings, filing status, pay frequency, deductions, and state or local rules, this page lets you enter simple rates instead of pretending to know your exact paycheck.

No tax on overtime context

If you are exploring the federal qualified overtime deduction, use the dedicated no-tax calculator to estimate the overtime premium portion that may qualify under current IRS guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?

Overtime is generally wage income. Your paycheck withholding can look higher because the check is larger or because payroll withholding formulas apply to that pay period.

Does this calculate my exact refund or tax return?

No. It estimates a paycheck-style take-home amount using simple rates you enter. Use IRS forms, payroll records, or a tax professional for filing decisions.

Does this include FICA?

Yes, it includes a simple 7.65% employee-side FICA estimate for Social Security and Medicare, without wage-base or special-case modeling.

Important limits

This calculator provides estimates only. It does not decide whether you are legally entitled to overtime, whether an employer is compliant, or what your final paycheck or taxes should be. Overtime rules can vary by jurisdiction, exemption status, bonuses, commissions, employer policy, and other pay types.
